About Me

As you know by now my name is Calvin Pienaar and I am a Registered Counsellor as well as a Director of Cornerstone Remedial School and Director of Cornerstone Training Academy. Further to this, I am a proud father to a beautiful little boy.
When I was younger, I first realised my fascination for people and society. I knew growing up that this was where my passion lay and where I wanted to focus my studies and career. Having empathy for people came easily to me and remaining objective with boundaries was something that seemed to come naturally to me. So I set off to UNISA to begin a BA Degree in Psychology and Communications. I absolutely loved it, but it was only when I started working in the community that I truly felt the benefit of my studies and passion. I volunteered my time at children’s homes as well as crisis centers and thoroughly enjoyed it.
This set me forward in completing my postgraduate BSocSci Honours (Psychology) at UKZN followed by my Bpsych and internship. During this time I saw a very definite need for a crisis center at the Greenwood Park SAPS, so I sat with them and eventually opened up a crisis center with them, offering supportive counseling and help for anyone in need.
From there and post my registering with the HPCSA, I went into private practice not only counseling but also working with depression, AD(H)D etc children and adults using Neuro and Biofeedback to assist. This lead me down an interesting path and in June of 2012, I opened the Doors to Cornerstone Remedial School. It was an exciting adventure and I can proudly say that Cornerstone has grown from strength to strength and shows no sign of slowing down. All the while I have continued in private practice.
From there I dabbled with the idea of training adults, doing courses to assist teachers, healthcare professional as well as families and the lay person. Assisting them with remedial teaching as well as a diverse knowledge of Psychology including counseling skills, stress management, behaviour modification, etc. and various other areas of interest. For this, I partnered up with a colleague of mine and we started Cornerstone Training Academy.
I am proud to say that I am loving life and I love the work I do, particularly my counseling. It is a dynamic job and no day is the same as the one before. They say “build a life you don’t need a holiday from” and that is exactly what I believe and strive to do each and every day of my life.
Thank you for listening to all I have had to say and I hope you have a lovely day/night further.
